2024 Recipient – Sophia Fontecchio
Sophia Fontecchio, who graduated from Downingtown S.T.E.M. High School this spring, was awarded the Chester County Suicide Prevention Task Force 2024 Scholarship of $1,000.
Sophia, pictured on the left, became involved in the cause after losing a friend to suicide at the age of 14. She became an advocate for suicide prevention and education legislation, and then founded a local non-profit, Let’s Bake The World A Better Place, which sells home-baked goods to fund a variety of local, national and international organizations. Some of the funding generated helped to create and distribute mental health care packages for local teens.
As Sophia prepares for college, she said Let’s Bake The World A Better Place is recruiting board members. Find out more on their website.
About the Scholarship
The Chester County Suicide Prevention Task Force mission is to decrease suicide through increased education and awareness. We know that we cannot do this alone; it takes all sectors of the community, including students. There are many students throughout Chester County which dedicate many many hours to raising awareness and promoting education on the importance of mental health and suicide prevention which is why we have created a Chester County Suicide Prevention Task Force Scholarship of $1,000.
The Scholarship candidates were asked to write a brief essay, no more than 300 words, describing their participation in school or community activities aimed at raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention. Activities may have occurred at any time during the prior four years and may be school or community based. We ask that they are specific about their role and the duration of the activity.
